10,000+ Treatments Completed
At Inspire TMS Denver, we specialize in mental health treatments that utilize modern technology and draw from evidence collected by highly qualified, trusted scientists. We are committed to providing accessible mental health care for individuals of all ages. Novel treatments, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), are often first developed and trialed for adult mental health symptoms. A lack of scientific investigation into use of such novel treatments in other age groups, often prolongs accessibility and use of these treatments for individuals with ages outside the initial studies. Once sufficient studies are in place for different age groups, however, and ideally FDA approval is granted, these treatments can be expanded to a larger number of individuals.
TMS has recently been granted FDA approval for treating adolescents ages 15 and up struggling with Major Depressive Disorder. In light of this, we now have a dedicated TMS treatment pathway for adolescents experiencing depressive symptoms not responsive to standard medication and therapy options.
TMS is a brain stimulation technique that allows for non-invasive alteration of brain activity, aimed at a specific brain region that is dysfunctional in depression. Pulsed electricity passes through ferromagnetic wiring in a plastic shell and this generates an electromagnetic field over the target area of dysfunction. Multiple “trains” of magnetic pulses are passed non-invasively over the scalp to stimulate neurons on the surface of the brain. Repetitive stimulations and treatments correct faulty neuronal wiring and pathways in the brain and relieve depression. Side effects are localized, typically mild, and often do not occur at all. If this occurs, patients may initially experience discomfort on the scalp at the site of stimulation, but only during the pulses, and typically this subsides immediately on ending each treatment. Headaches infrequently occur following some sessions of TMS as well, but can be managed with OTC pain relievers in nearly all cases. No sedation or anesthetic is involved with treatments, thus patients can resume their daily activities immediately after receiving TMS. TMS does not cause cognitive impairment. TMS therapy typically occurs daily on weekdays over six weeks, followed by a short taper off treatment for two to three weeks. Treatment sessions last 18.5 minutes and patients are in and out of the office within 30 minutes.
Adolescence can be a complex period of growth and stress when mental health symptoms may appear for the first time. Although psychotherapy and medication are common treatments and can be successful for many, these treatment modalities are not always effective. Trialing repeated medications and experiencing side effects from medications can add additional stress and ultimately not relieve depression. As a result, we offer TMS therapy as an alternative that can replace medications or be used in conjunction with medications that are tolerated and may provide some benefit.
We are excited to offer TMS treatment to adolescents, using a novel therapy that has helped many of our adult patients achieve alleviation of depressive symptoms. The recent FDA approval of TMS therapy for adolescents aged 15+ marks a milestone in the area of adolescent depression care.
We provide TMS treatment to adolescents when indicated, but do not provide medical management plans and psychotherapy to adolescents. In order for adolescents to begin TMS treatment, patients must have an existing prescriber and therapist to ensure there is holistic care for the patient, and as medication trials and therapy need to have been utilized prior to getting
insurance approval for TMS. We are experienced in working closely with multidisciplinary care teams and want to guarantee the best possible service for adolescents who are undergoing critical periods of cognitive, physical, and emotional growth.
It is important to note that there are eligibility requirements to undergo TMS treatment, especially when claiming insurance coverage. As such, individual assessment is required to determine the suitability of TMS treatment. We require that adolescents being treated with TMS have a mental health provider providing ongoing care, typically an adolescent psychiatrist in addition to a therapist. We are committed to collaborative care and want to ensure that TMS treatment will provide added benefits to the patient's existing care plan.

Please note: Not all insurance providers offer coverage of TMS treatment for adolescents at this time. Despite FDA approval, it typically takes some time before insurance plans update medical policy guidelines. Please check with your insurance company or ask us to verify if your insurance plan will cover TMS for adolescents.
At Inspire TMS Denver, we are dedicated to making mental healthcare accessible to as many individuals as possible. We are proud to offer advanced technological treatments backed by strong research, such as TMS, to individuals as young as 15. Reach out now to schedule your or your loved one’s consultation!
